2nd SEA FESTIVAL OF SANTANDER 2009

 

The first Sea Festival of Spain


In 2005 was organized the 1st Festival del Mar of Santander. It is the first sea festival to take place in Spain.
 
It born to commemorate the city’s anniversary (250th Anniversary of the granting of city status to Santander, (1755, King Fernando VI), but also to be the first of a regular cycle of festivals in the future.

All fleets will be present: The Spanish Navy, fishing, sports boats and Tall Ships. 

Tall sailing ships from the International Fleet will take part in cruises from different ports to Santander.
 
The Cruises leg that begins the Festival. It re-create in Santander the indelible memory of the 2002 Cutty Sark Regatta and 2005 Festival del Mar de Santander.

The Festival will be opened by a cruise from Amsterdam to Santander; a voyage which will leave an indelible memory in those who take part in this trip to the past, in the celebration of our sea history.

In order to take part in the cruises, the boats must fill in this form before 1st July 2009 and send it either to Santander Festival del Mar 2009 Office.
 
Take advantage of this chance to sail on board of a Tall Ship, a great sailing boat, where you will discover the sea and the professional sailing training given by “Sail Training”, an excellent journey in tall sail boats.

THE FESTIVAL:
2009 SANTANDER FESTIVAL DEL MAR

 
The Santander Festival del Mar intends to perpetuate in time, thus becoming the first sea festival in Spain.
A sea festival is a tribute to the nautical and sea culture which can be best held in our Bay.
 
In 1755 our port used to be the origin and end of the colonial trade, and, now, 250 years later, we will re-live that period.
 



  PROGRAMME: (from 12th to 15th September 2009)

 

Friday 11th September

-Arrive of Army units.

-Arrive units of Administration and fishing ships.

-Act of receiving the officers of the Army vessels. 

 

Saturday 12th September

-Amsterdam-Santander Cruise Crew Reception.
-Music and performances (regional dances, live music, etc.)
-Regional products market (various types of cheese, wines, handicrafts, books, etc.

-Sailing Race J-80-Visit to the ships and activities on them.

-2009 Santander Sea Festival Opening Ceremony with authorities, sponsors and officers.

-Cutting the ribbon and hoisting of flags. 

 

Sunday 13th September

-Visit to the ships and activities and receptions on them.

-Music and performances (regional dances, live music, etc.)

-Race of ships with Latin rigging, “Santander Festival del Mar Trophy”.
-Swimming crossing of the Bay of Santander.
-Start of the popular swimming cruise.

-Timed Jumps Exhibition.-Visit to the ships and activities on them.

-Mass tribute to Sea Men.-Dinner with the offices. 

 

Monday 14th September

-Visit to the ships and activities on them.

-Music and performances (regional dances, live music, etc.)

-Crew concentration.

-Delivery of trophies (J-80, diving contest, swimming cruise, painting contest, etc.)

-Delivery of trophies to Santander cruise’s participants.

-Visit to the ships, receptions and activities on them.

-Crew party.

-Fireworks over the Bay. 

 

Tuesday 15th September

-Closing Ceremony.

-Music and performances.

-Regional products market.

-Boarding of participants in the Sail Parade: A short journey along the coast that will be easily seen from inland open to all ships who wish to participate.

-The roundtrip will be to Abra of Sardinero.

TRAINEES AND VOLUNTEERS
 
 
IF YOU ARE 18 TO 60 YEARS OLD, COME AND TAKE PART IN THE GREATEST ADVENTURE OF YOUR LIFE.
 
You can take part in two different ways:
 
As a TRAINEE in the TALL SHIP SANTANDER CRUISES 2009

You will be a trainee crew member in tall sailing ships and will carry out different shipping tasks.
There is a wide variety of tasks: maintenance and cleaning of the ship, helping in the kitchen, helping in the manoeuvres of the ship by pulling ropes and sails.
Teamwork is vital; for, although more than 200 people work in a tall sailing ship, each of them has a very important role to play.

As a Volunteer for the 2009 Santander Festival del Mar

Volunteers have an important responsibility, since they will be in charge of the security
of the ships as well as that of the visitors and participants in the Festival.
Their main duty will be to assure the communication between all the sectors of the Festival. They must coordinate shows so that performances at the Port turn out to be perfect.
They will be required to be familiar with the schedule in order to give visitors information about the times, shows, visits to the ships, prices and everything needed to achieve visitors’ involvement.
